What to bring to University- Ultimate Checklist!

When moving internationally, the biggest question is WHAT DO I BRING WITH ME? Cause there’s only so much you can bring, given the baggage limits. So we made a list of things that are UNIVERSITY ESSENTIALS!!!

First things first, IMPORTANT TRAVEL DOCUMENTS.

  1. Passport, driver’s license or any other relevant government identification.

  2. Always keep extra passport sized photos with you, it can be helpful in miraculous ways.

  3. Student Finance documents if applicable.

  4. Admissions letter

  5. Accommodation confirmation documents, they can be helpful for address proof.

  6. Acceptance letter and package.

  7. Documents required for opening a bank account. These mainly include passport, address proof, admissions letter or a letter issued from your university. Check with your preferred bank for accurate information.

  8. All previous degrees, diplomas and exam certificates.

Note: If you’re moving to the UK and planning to get a job, you’re gonna have to apply for a National Insurance number so be prepared for that.

Also, if you have medical prescriptions from your previous doctor, make sure you bring that and your medical file.

Another important thing is CLOTHES.

When moving to any country you have to considerate of what kind of weather the country generally has..

Since I moved to the United Kingdom and it’s usually cold here, I’d say don’t bother carrying sundresses, tank tops, shorts or any kind of summer clothing, unless you’re up for layering them multiple times.

But then again, be considerate of where you’re coming from. For example, if you’re coming to the United Kingdom from Iceland, it’ll be warmer than you’re used to but it’s really a matter of personal preference.

Regardless, you’re gonna need a coat and boots since it does occasionally snow here. It’s beautiful but it’s cold.

Don’t worry too much about clothes, you can always shop here!

Moving on to ACADEMIC ITEMS.

We use ‘academic’ very casually cause, let’s be honest, we’re Artists!

All creative courses have very different choices of materials and to be more precise we asked students of particularly opposite courses, a Fine Art student and a Costume and Theatrical Design student, about their art supply suitcase.

As a Fine Artist, she brought all the art supplies she owned, you can narrow it down to the ones you absolutely love working it and are comfortable with but avoid spending all that money on expensive supplies again. There’s brushes, all kinds of paint ranging from watercolours to oil paint, palettes, tool kit and 100 different papers for different mediums. Cut down on some clothes and bring all the art supplies you can.

As a Costume Design student, she brought things like her shears and snips, basics supplies that she already had, pins, tape measure etc. She also brought several books with her that either give her inspiration or have her favourite patterns in them.

If you don’t have relevant art supplies it’s okay! You can buy them after your course begins so you know what you should buy and what you’re using.

Last but not the least, all those extra things that REALLY MAKE IT FEEL LIKE HOME.

A sure fire way to beat homesickness or atleast keep it at bay is by bringing small momentos from home, that can include stuffed animals, trinkets or photographs.

Now this a weird one, but if you have textured hair that needs love and diversion, then bring your favourite hair products with you.

Bring your hair dryer, straightener, curler or any other electronics that you use for your hair. Also, your laptop or tablet, chargers and a TRAVEL ADAPTOR. Cannot emphasise this enough, you’re gonna need a universal travel adaptor.

One last thing, SEASONINGS!

Some flavours might be different and it’s always good to have a little bit of home and authenticity. It’s not a necessity but if you’re the kind to beat homesickness with food then it’s a life hack.

That’s all, you’re good to go!
